taste

Since my last post dissed the taste of my friends, I feel it's only fair to admit the following:

I've got an Xbox 360 with several games that I haven't played through yet. I've got a tivo full of shows. I've got a PS2 and an Xbox, both with a few games I didn't get through either.

What am I spending my free time on? Super Princess Peach for the Nintendo DS, which I'm still trying to convince myself wasn't made for children. It's relatively simple, but really fun, and every time I have five free minutes, I find myself picking it up and finishing a level. That's the beauty of it. There's no boot time, there's no worrying about having to play for 30 minutes before I save like with the new Mario game on the DS, it's just a bunch of really clever and fun levels, you can beat them in 5 minutes, and then put it down. Or in my case, don't put it down and waste half the afternoon playing.

But yeah, take my disses about not having any taste with a grain of salt. I'm playing a game with Princess in the title.

X3

So I've been reading through my daily blogs tonight, and of all the geeky people I read, every one of them said that they loved X3. We just got back from seeing it, and I just didn't really enjoy it. It was freaking gorgeous beyond a shadow of a doubt, some of the best special effects I've seen, but the meat of it was pretty crappy.

The actors didn't really draw me in like with the other two films, and they tried to touch on so many mutants that none of them got to do enough. "Oh, look! This one makes fire! This one walks through walls! This one has wings!" Juggernaut was pretty funny, though. Jean Grey, albeit being a pivotal plot character, was completely unreadable and unsympathetic, and ended up just being dangerous in the same way a tornado would, not a person.

Anyway, I'm just surprised. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it, or I'm just sick of superhero films for the time being. Or none of you have any taste.

now that's a big drain

These photos of a Japanese storm drain system are some of the craziest most cyberpunk images of manmade stuff I've ever seen.

I really want to see a Discovery channel special on them, how they were made, etc.

I want to go play in them.

Thank you, Nintendo

I've been watching all of the coverage of E3 from my couch, since I'm not cool enough to go in person. There's a lot of freaking awesome stuff coming out, the trailers for Final Fantasy XIII are amazing, Metal Gear Solid 4 looks great, so many trailers just blow your mind (except the Halo 3 trailer which was inexplicably boring as hell).

But Nintendo has me excited... I'd damn near say GIDDY.

If you haven't seen it already, any of you who give a rat's ass about gaming, or just having fun in general need to download the Nintendo press conference from E3. I recommend getting it using bittorrent (if you don't know how to use bittorrent, just download Azureus, it's really easy) at this site:

There's a lot of cool trailers at that site, so poke around if you like, but make sure you download that movie.

The gameplay looks AMAZING. There's two motion sensitive controllers, one of them has a speaker on it, which wasn't known until just now, so if you fire a bow and arrow in Zelda, you can hear the damn thing shoot from your hand into the target. You can have swordfights. You can play games like golf and tennis. You can play a first person shooter by AIMING YOUR HAND instead of fumbling around with your thumbs like we've been forced to do for years.

But most of all, while all these game developers have been screaming "We're going to light your balls on fire with ELEVENTY BILLION POLYGONS and PHOTOREALISTIC FACIAL PORES", Nintendo said "Fuck that, we're going to make it fun."

I've noticed lately that even though my Xbox 360 is 1000x more powerful, I've been playing my Nintendo DS way more. Because the games are fun. Hell, if there weren't achievements on the 360, I'd hardly play at all. Those just tickle my anal/competitive streak. But the DS is so damn fun. And with the new Super Mario Bros, they've just owned me for good.

At the end of the press conference, the freaking President of Nintendo calls up some dude from the audience and plays tennis with him, all of them jumping around on stage and swinging their controllers like a bunch of children. I got such a huge grin on my face from that. God bless those guys for keeping it fun.

So with all the games that are coming out, I'm excited about a lot of them, but the one that I'm genuinely sad I can't play yet is the Wii. I want one so badly. It just looks so damn fun.
